Annie Gentils Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of works by Paul-Armand Gette (Lyon 1927) developed in the past decade. He is considered as one of the great masters of contemporary erotic art.
Paul-Armand Gette is regularly regarded as a conceptual artist, but the key focus in his work is less on reducing the work of art to a concept than on the link between art and science. He trained originally as a biologist and geologist and made a promising start to a scientific career as head of a laboratory. Slowly but surely, however, he began to find science claustrophobic: it was too narrow for him. In order to be able to focus on the poetry of science, he transferred his attention to art. However, his fascination with nature is still clearly reflected in his work, which incorporates highly disparate elements drawn from science, the visual arts and literature. For almost 30 years, young girls as have played a central role in the artistic pursuits of Paul-Armand Gette. One of his oldest projects from the series ‘Calcinations', ‘Tomb for a Nymph' 1960 leads us to suppose that the fabulous creature has been a stable presence in his methodical and already lengthy career.
March 28 - May 20, 2010 in Annie Gentils Gallery, Peter Benoitstraat 40, 2018 Antwerpen. Open Wed-Sat, 2-6pm.
